The "Hotel Child" album from Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos. This is one of small collection of fabulous albums I have bought in cheap record stores purely because the album cover looked interesting, a method that I recommend to anyone. I bought Hotel Child while mooching about in Cannes, which I also recommend.
The first record I bought in this collection is "I Called for a Rope and They Threw Me a Rock" by Swamp Dogg. I haven't listened to that in ages - you see kids, back in my day, they had this thing called vinyl...
Perhaps the most important record there is "Black Music for White People" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, but that deserves it's own post.

Some nice things that happened today

  1. Changing into nice pyjamas after a long day in a suit.
  2. Eating cheese on toast.
  3. Lying in bed listening to it raining outside (this is best when you don't have to get up and go out in it, but I'll make do).
  4. Drinking a really good cup of coffee.
  5. Finding the very catchy advert at http://www.runworldrun.com/

Getting used to the new phone

5:27 pm By BigLig

I've not quite got into the habit of using the camera in the new phone all the time. My old phone had a camera as well, but of course with the new one it should be relatively easy to put the pictures here.
For example, the story I was about to tell, regarding the tramp I saw in Maidenhead in Saturday dressed entirely as a traditional tramp might be, except for a mobile phone earpiece, would be entirely more satisfying if accompanied by a picture.

Choices, choices.

One of the things I've learnt about myself over the years is that while I'm not very good at doing something, I'm very good at not doing it. Example: I endlessly have trouble with getting into a habit of doing exercise, but I quit caffine without any trouble at all. I miss Dr Pepper sometimes, but that is about it.
So I am going to try to loose weight by quitting things. Alcohol I have already done, and it seems to be holding up OK. Every so often I get a tremendous craving for a drink, but it passes quickly. I guess that will get better as time goes by.
Next should be sugar or fat. Not sure which one though. Sugar is easier since I don't eat it that much of it to start with, but of course that means that quitting fat will make more of a difference.

It's not from Austin Powers, it's from Our Man Flint!

Because I get that about my ringtone sometimes...

Anyhoo, I am now the proud owner of a Sony Ericsson P910i. Initial impressions are good. It is a little slow to open applications, and people who make PDA operating systems need very badly to start including a way to unload applications from memory when you are done with them, but it so far appears to do a lot of what I want from it.
More reports to come. I'm thinking of writing a comparitive review of it and a Series 60 smartphone I was looking at earlier.

Un-pah

If I seemed a little stressed in my futurephone related post below it is because I have been working months on renegotiating my phone contract (because it is one of the twenty handsets we have at work). Very frustrating stuff.
However, the frustration may have been worth it, because as a result of another administrative delay, it is now August, and the new August price list has brought all the phone costs down.
It's also made my lament about the P505 irrelevant, since that unit is no longer on the price list. I think the fact that I am one of only seven people outside of Asus to have ever heard of the thing may have hampered their sales efforts.
So, it looks like I am going to end up with a Sony P910i after all.

Interesting device

I was visiting Freedom Input to look at a new tiny BT keyboard they stock - as I imagine I might want to consider one when/if I get my new converged futurephone doohickey, and scrolling through came accross something called the Keepsafe. Two small boxes. If the small one moves more than 6 meters from the large one, the large one starts to beep at you.
Based on my ability to loose important things, I reckon I should take a dozen.
Oh, and they seem to sell a BT headset that clips onto your glasses, not your ear.... very interesting stuff indeed.

Pah...

My cunning plan to replace my mobile phone with a smartphone (cheaply) is unravelling... I had my eye on the Asus P505, which seems a good unit so far as I can tell, but it looks like I will not be getting as mad a discount on that.I say as far as I can tell as almost no-one seems to have reviewed it in much depth.
Worst of it is that today (before learning of the unravelling) I saw an insane discount on 512Mb SD cards from my memory card supplier and snapped it up without thinking. So that ties me into a unit with a full size SD slot - and since I am guaranteed that mad discount on a Sony Ericsson P910i this may have been premature.
Thing about the Sony is, you're paying two and a half times more for a 512Mb Memory Stick than I paid for that SD, because Sony stupidly thought that owning software would encourage sale of the hardware. Of course, the opposite happened - when you own the software, then you want DRM in the hardware - even though your customers do not - and as a result you hurt the hardware sales. When people think about pocekt music players these days, they think iPod. It just doesn't make sense. Playing music is not the main thing I want a smartphone for, but it's an important thing, because to me having a converged device should mean I'm not carrying any more electronics with me.
What now? A review of all my options. Perhaps I'll make a spreadsheet. Secretly, I think I enjoy making the spreadsheets more than I enjoy the new gadget.
Secretly, I think if you have a secret, blogging it may not be the best course.

Am I out of step?

I think I must be, I've only just figured out how incredibly useful Bloglines is. It's not so much seeing all my frequently visited blogs in one place, it's the way it shows you how many unread articles each has. I've been failing to get on with RSS aggregators for some time, so this is a good thing.
